This 185-square-foot kitchen and breakfast nook was gutted down to the framing and rebuilt from there. We widened the entrance to the nook to open up the flow, added a new and more accessible back door, and ran substantial new electrical, HVAC, and plumbing before any finishes went in. The result pairs custom cabinetry, modern tile, and high-end appliances in a space that works as well as it looks.
The kitchen was dated and closed off. A narrow opening to the breakfast nook cut the two spaces apart and made the whole area feel tighter than its footprint suggested, and the back door was awkward to use. The homeowners wanted a kitchen that connected properly to the rest of the house — and finishes and appliances worth building around.
We took the kitchen down to the framing so the layout could change rather than just the surfaces. Widening the entrance to the breakfast nook was a structural change, and it did the most work — the kitchen and nook now read as one space. A new back door in a better position made the exterior access easier to use. With the structure resolved, we ran substantial new electrical, HVAC, and plumbing, then installed new flooring and wall finishes, custom cabinetry, modern tile, and high-end appliances.
The kitchen is open to the nook, easy to move through, and finished to a standard that holds up to daily use — custom cabinetry, modern tile, and high-end appliances in a 185-square-foot space that no longer feels like one. The new back door gets used constantly. Total investment: $130,000.
