These homeowners first worked with Steiner Remodel twelve years ago, and came back for their basement. We converted 600 square feet of dingy, unfinished space into a finished living room and a new bathroom — adding windows to bring in daylight, maximizing storage throughout, and keeping the open floor plan the homeowners wanted, all in keeping with the character of a 1910s home.
The basement was unfinished, dark and short on daylight — usable for storage and little else, beneath a house full of character. The homeowners wanted real living space and a second bathroom down there, built to a modern energy standard and in keeping with a 1910s home.
We designed the conversion with the homeowners, starting with daylight: adding windows turned a storage level into a room people would actually use. From there, an open floor plan that still maximized storage, and a new bathroom with high-end tile detailed to suit a 1910s house. Significant new plumbing and electrical went in throughout, all designed to be energy-efficient.
600 square feet that used to be dingy and unfinished is now bright, open living space with its own bathroom. The new windows do the heavy lifting — the room reads as part of the house, not the level beneath it. Total investment: $125,000.
