For more than fifteen years, this Lents basement did nothing but hold laundry and storage. With a family member moving in, the homeowners needed it to do considerably more. We converted all 850 square feet into finished, habitable space — a bedroom, an office, a full bathroom, and a proper laundry room — along with a custom climate-controlled wine storage room.
The basement had sat unfinished for over fifteen years, used only for laundry and storage. When a family member moved in, the house simply ran out of room. The homeowners needed real living space, a second bathroom, and a bedroom — and they wanted it without adding on to the house or moving out of a neighborhood they liked.
Converting unfinished space into habitable rooms is one of the best returns available on a remodeling dollar, and this basement had 850 square feet of it sitting idle. We worked closely with the homeowners on a layout that gave the new resident a genuine home rather than a spare room — bedroom, office, and full bathroom — and moved the laundry into a finished room of its own. Significant new plumbing, electrical, and HVAC went in to support habitable-space requirements throughout. With the plan settled, there was room left for one extra: a custom climate-controlled wine storage room.
The house gained a full floor of living space without gaining a square foot of footprint. The family member has a bedroom, an office, and a bathroom of their own. Laundry finally has a finished room instead of a corner of the storage area. And the wine room — climate-controlled, custom-built — is the part guests ask about. Total investment: $165,000.
